What is Mural Art?

Mural art is basically an artwork made on a wall or a permanent surface. It can typically be found on the walls of big buildings, in alleys or even in a cave. It is considered to be one of the earliest forms of art ever made in human history. It all started in the palaeolithic era where humans used to live in caves. Documentations of their daily lives including hunting and their state of living in a community were all jotted down in visual forms on the surface of mountains. Today, the same kind of approach is also being manifested but of course, as the human civilization develops, mural art has also very much grown in a broader context.

Humans have the need to express, to tell out a story. And as much as exhaling a story is important, absorbing it in is also as crucial. Mural arts have been created for many purposes other than a tool to merely document life-events. It can be a symbol, a form of rebellion, a religious message, or a certain idea that can uplift or demotivate a community. Almost the same as an artwork in a gallery, a mural art can influence a much bigger audience from all walks of life.

In the modern day, mural art also plays an important role in giving artists the chance to be discovered. To name a few, artists like Keith Haring, Diego Rivera and Banksy have all created such big impacts on a global scale. Especially for an artist like Banksy, where he lives today in the social media era, contents are being spread out almost instantly. People from all over the world can be inspired including here in Malaysia. Artists like Kenji Chai, Katun and so many more have sent out their talented works to continue feeding the great inspiration for others.

Unfortunately, a big part of mural art is that these artworks are exposed to the general public without any boundaries. There is no such thing as a safeguard to be assigned to protect this art form from getting vandalised. Some mural artists have indeed accepted this fact but no one could deny either that this type of disadvantage can too be upsetting. For instance, in regards to Malaysia’s success on flattening the Covid-19 pandemic graph during the hit of the first wave, a local artist named Suhaimi Ali has done a set of mural portraits of the Director-General of Health Malaysia, Dr. Hisham Abdullah and other Malaysian ministers. But sadly, those portraits have awfully been vandalised with harsh words and the mural has now been taken down.

A mural could only be a form of artistic expression of an individual, but the impact of a meaning behind it can very much be relatable and universal. Mural art started off in the ancient times which gives us the opportunity to learn about our past history which it also implies that we can also help educate our future generations.
